An American Mastiff or English Mastiff is a great family pet to invest in. If you have ever gotten a new pet for you or your family, you know what an exciting experience it can be. Mastiffs are a breed of dog that will go well with any member of your family. American Mastiffs are an unusual breed in some aspects, so you may have to do a little extra work when finding the best breeder of these dogs. However, when you are trying to choose the right Mastiff breeder, there are a few things that you should be looking for and a few things you should try to avoid. There are many qualities that you will want any breeder to have.

On top of the list of things to avoid are pet shops. These stores are a great place to purchase the supplies that you will need for your animals, but you should never buy any pets from a pet store. Pet stores get their pets from places known as "mills". Puppy milling is a large business and is one to avoid. Puppies and other animals are shipped in from these inhumane "mills" that are usually out of state. The animals that come from these mills are not properly cared for and may have behavioral problems and health problems by the time they reach a pet store. Also, buying animals from pet stores encourages the continuance of this dreadful milling practice. Avoid buying your canine from a pet store!

Now that you have been warned about pet stores, you can start searching your phone book or the internet for a local Mastiff breeder. This is probably the best way for you to start your search, but you always need to do your research on these Mastiff breeder. When you locate a few breeders, start calling them for information on their animals and prices. Of course, you can start interviewing these breeders over the phone, but you will want to see the dogs and meet the breeder before making any serious decisions.

You may also want to get recommendations from other Mastiff owners, if you know any. If you do not know any Mastiff owners, you can always drop by a dog show that may be close to your area. A Mastiff owner that is found at a dog show may be your best resource as Mastiff's are obviously their passion. Since Mastiff breeder are sometimes rare, you may have to resort to getting information in this way. You should be aware of what you are looking for and have questions prepared for the breeder you decide to purchase from.
